What is Iyengar Yoga?
Iyengar yoga is the world's most widely practised method of yoga, developed by B.K.S. Iyengar of Pune, India who has studied and practised yoga continuously for over 70 years.
A form of Hatha Yoga, it focuses on the structural alignment of the physical body through the development of asanas. Through the practice of a system of asanas, it aims to unite the body, mind and spirit for health and well-being. This discipline is considered a powerful tool to relieve the stresses of modern-day life which in turn can help promote total physical and spiritual well-being.
Iyengar Yoga is characterized by great attention to detail and precise focus on body alignment. Iyengar pioneered the use of "props" such as blankets, benches, blocks, bricks, straps, and even sand bags, which function as aids allowing beginners to experience asanas more easily and fully than might otherwise be possible without several years of practice. Props also allow tired or ill students to enjoy the benefits of many asanas via fully "supported" methods requiring less muscular effort, therefore benefiting more profoundly from the therapy of the poses.
Iyengar teachers complete at least two years of rigorous training for the introductory certificate. They may complete subsequent intermediate levels and senior levels of certification, potentially entailing a decade or more of training.
B.K.S. Iyengar also developed extensively ways of applying his practice to various ailments, diseases, and disorders. Many of these sources of suffering, such as chronic backache, immunodeficiency, high blood pressure, insomnia, depression, menopause, and many others have specific programs of Iyengar yoga associated with them.
I started attending Iyengar Yoga classes in 1997. In 2002 I got my introductory teaching certificate and started teaching. I gained my Junior Intermediate teaching certificates in the following years:
Level 1 - 2007
Level 2 - 2008
Level 3 - 2012
I am affiliated with the Iyengar Yoga Association (UK). My membership number is 1546.
I have raised funds for Greenpeace (2012) and the Prison Phoenix Trust (2008) by organizing a yoga workshop and participating in the Om yoga show yogathon.
Who is Priscila?
I am a South-east London based Brazilian Iyengar yoga teacher with a warm dynamic manner.
“I started attending yoga classes when I was going through a difficult time in my life. I was feeling quite low in myself. I worked hard and recovered well with the practice of yoga. I learned and discovered how wonderfully and miraculously holistic yoga practice is for the human being. It is a real gift to mankind. I am grateful to have found it and wish to perpetuate it with as much dedication as Mr Iyengar and his family. “
“I was recommended to start yoga by an osteopath who treated me for back pain and stiffness. Priscila's yoga classes have helped improve my flexibility and posture. In addition I found that the classes have brought me more strength, energy and balance and I am less affected by stress. As a beginner Priscila's teaching provided a firm foundation of safe practice that enabled me to make good progress despite a lack of suppleness and poor fitness at the beginning.” Richard Boston
“Priscila has been my teacher for the last four years. During this time her classes have always been filled with precision and accurate corrections, always looking for the perfect alignment. She is a caring and loving
teacher. I can't praise her enough.” Pedro Montalvo
"Most of the time when I get to your yoga class, I am tired, broken and there are just pieces of what is left of the week, work, school, family affairs, heavy news but then you start your work and the pieces get together and I assemble myself and return to my complete self. I come back home without thanking you sometimes. So thank you." Pedro Telles
